How is offset quality ensured?
We’re in this business to make a real difference in the fight against climate change, so we put a lot of effort into making sure that our carbon offsets meet high standards. All our offsets come from domestic, community-based projects that pass our stringent vetting process.
Working with our independent advisory board, we’ve defined a carbon offset policy that lays out our criteria for high-quality projects: any project added to our portfolio must be real, additional, transparent, and have extra environmental and social benefits. As a result, they satisfy the requirements of the International Carbon Reduction and Offset Alliance’s Code of Best Practice.
We’ve also assembled a project selection committee composed of leaders from the environmental community. They vet every project we consider, and no project is added to our portfolio without their unanimous approval.
Projects that clear all these screens are added to our portfolio. Once a customer earns or purchases an offset, we transfer it to the non-profit Clean Air-Cool Planet for permanent retirement.
Every step of the way, we voluntarily subject our processes to a detailed annual audit to ensure there’s no funny stuff.
