How is a project added to the portfolio?
The Brighter Planet portfolio of renewable energy projects evolves over time.
As our membership grows, new projects are added to our core blend, as often as every month. We pick projects located in communities across the United States that add capacity and technological diversity to our portfolio. Each project makes a material difference in cleaning up the environment, and furthermore we guarantee the overall performance of our portfolio (this is a first in the industry).
Every time we want to add a new project, we follow a rigorous approval process:
- Brighter Planet identifies a renewable energy project candidate that would add to the capacity and/or geographic and technological diversity of our portfolio.
- The Brighter Planet staff verifies that the candidate satisfies the Carbon Offset Policy.
- __Native__Energy sends materials about that project if inventory is available.
- The materials are forwarded to the Brighter Planet Project Selection Committee (PSC).
- The PSC reviews the materials against the Carbon Offset Policy.
- The Brighter Planet staff gathers extra information at the request of the PSC.
- Once all necessary information is collected, the PSC gives the official thumbs-up or thumbs-down.
- If the project is approved by the PSC, it is added to the portfolio.
- The Brighter Planet staff adjusts the blend to include a certain percentage of offsets from the new project.
- Offsets get purchased on behalf of Brighter Planet members and retired through Clean-Air Cool Planet.
