Every time you complete this action, you will reduce emissions by an estimated 82 lbs. CO2e.
Have an old gas stove with a pilot range? A typical pilot range uses enough gas every year to generate over 80 pounds of CO2 . By some estimates, the pilot lighting system for a stovetop can be responsible for as much as 50% of the range’s annual fuel consumption. New gas stovetops have electric ignition systems that maintain the convenience of a pilot range without the utility and emissions costs. If you can’t afford a new stove, you might be able to disable your pilot light (don’t just blow it out) and use a long-handled lighter or a match to light the range when you need to. Be sure to consult your stove’s owner’s manual or an experienced source before attempting to disable your pilot range.
