Programmable thermostats make it really easy to save lots of money and carbon on heating and cooling. Rather than having to remember to adjust the thermostat when you go to bed or leave the house, you can program a customized heating and cooling schedule. They also make your house more comfortable — you can set the heat to come on half an hour before you wake up so the house is warm by the time you get out of the shower. Just programming the heat to turn down to 50° or 55° for the eight hours you’re asleep can save 10% a year on your heating bill.
Non-electronic thermostats contain mercury, so be sure to recycle them so it can be disposed of properly or re-used. Contact your local recycling or waste disposal facility, or visit the Thermostat Recycling Corporation website.
