Fireplaces are cozy and attractive. Unfortunately they’re the least-efficient means of heating — most of the heat goes straight up the chimney. Fireplaces are also a significant source of air pollution. Wood smoke may smell nice, but the World Health Organization estimates that chronic exposure to smoke from biomass cooking fires is responsible for up to 2 million premature deaths each year in developing countries. Instead of a fireplace, use a wood or pellet stove.
