Every time you complete this action, you will reduce emissions by an estimated 2 lbs. CO2e.
If it’s plugged in, it’s probably pulling power. Other than lamps, pretty much anything that has a power cord can never really be turned off — it still uses a little “standby” electricity. About 10% of the electricity you buy is wasted this way. You can eliminate standby power use by plugging appliances and electronics into power strips that you turn off when you’re done. Just doing this with your home office system will save enough electricity in a year to run your refrigerator for three months!
Note: Some devices, such as DVRs and satellite boxes, will loose stored information when unplugged. These may need reprogramming or time to download information when power is restored.
