Conservation recommendation for shelter

#6: Enjoy the stars — turn off your outdoor lights.

Light pollution makes the stars harder to see each year. It also represents a huge waste of electricity. Many outdoor lights are left on all night, and people often forget to turn them off during the day. Ask yourself whether those lights are really necessary.

If you decide you still need some outdoor lights, install a combination motion and photo sensor. This will turn the lights on if it’s dark and someone is around, but keep them off otherwise.

For holiday lights, use a timer to turn them on and then off at a specific time.

If you already have outdoor lights, remember to turn them off during the day. If you just can’t remember, try one of these gadgets:

If you’re thinking about installing outdoor lights, choose lights with dawn/dusk sensors. If you can, get lights powered by solar panels — you won’t even have to install wires!
