I'm Brighter Planet's Staff Scientist. I research energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions to develop the footprint calculators on our website. I also write conservation tips and knowledgebase entries, monitor our current offset projects and evaluate new ones, and keep up on the science and politics of climate change.

Before joining Brighter Planet, I re-designed Clean Air-Cool Planet's GHG calculator for colleges and universities, helped organize a national grassroots day of climate action, and graduated from Middlebury College. During my time outside the office I enjoy climbing, hiking, canoeing, bagpipes, and marmalade.

    Hey Ian,
    Moira let me know about this FB for Brighter Planet, so I set up a profile but am having some trouble figuring out how many points I’ve earned to help fund sustainable energy projects. Any pointers?

    I just wanted to say on your tip about turning off outdoor lights… in a city like mine it helps fight crime to keep on a door light. It also helps because we have many street lights that are out, and motion detector lights don’t help make you & criminals more visible while walking around after dark. Sometimes the carbon offset has to be offset with common sense.
